Giving Up is Never an Option. How Is.
It's a strange, humbling thing to know that hard times are coming. Not might come. They are coming. We all eventually hit a season that stretches us to our wits' end, and when it does, a thought creeps in: I'll just stop, and maybe that'll make me feel better.
The unfortunate truth is that it won't. Stopping only trades the pain you're avoiding for a deeper one. The pain you're feeling right now isn't the obstacle to peace. It's the price of admission.
You Can't Numb the Bad Without Numbing the Good
Another form of stopping is avoidance. We dodge events, people, work, anything at all, just to block out the discomfort, the uncertainty, the anxiety. But here's the catch. The feelings we run from are wired to the same source as the ones we chase. You can't numb one without numbing the other. Trying to avoid pain while keeping the good stuff is like refusing to fall in love because you're scared of heartbreak. They're the same coin. You don't get to keep one side.
Those uncomfortable feelings deserve just as much recognition as comfort, pleasure, and peace. They're what make us human. So regardless of how you feel, do it anyway.
What the Discomfort Is Trying to Tell You
Here's the part nobody tells you. Sitting with those feelings is exactly how we surpass what we thought was possible. Just as we lean into the good, we have to turn toward the hard stuff with the same honesty. Ask yourself: What is this feeling trying to show me? What is it trying to tell me? You'll find an answer. It won't always be the easy one.
Personally, I'm in the middle of a big change right now. I'm stepping into a full-time position and becoming completely independent. Adapting to the schedule, the job, and honestly to life itself has been challenging. But what I'm learning is that the discomfort I'm feeling means something. It means I've accepted the move. It means I'm actually walking into the next chapter instead of standing at the door. If there's one thing I know, it's that this will pass. Nature never moves against itself, and neither, in the end, do you.
The Indomitable Human Spirit
There is something amazing in every one of us: the indomitable human spirit. Think of all the times you'd had enough, when the weight of the world was on your shoulders and every part of you wanted to stop. But you kept going anyway. That's the spirit, quietly pulling you forward. You'll fight a lot of battles of you versus you, and the moment you commit to moving forward, especially when it's hard, you become undefeated. Not because it stops being hard, but because you stopped quitting.
So no, giving up was never the real question. The only question worth asking is how. How do I take the next step, and the one after that.
And remember, you are not alone. It's hard, but something good is waiting on the other side. You won't always believe that in the moment. Believe it anyway, and let the proof catch up to you.
